Procrastination

Procrastination | 59,4 x 84 cm | 2024

In a world that is constantly moving and where the demands and expectations seem to be ever-increasing, many of us struggle with procrastination. It’s a phenomenon that manifests itself in various ways, ranging from postponing work tasks to delaying personal goals and commitments.

Olesia Shinkorenko's photo series "Procrastination" reveals the complexity of emotions caused by this issue. In these photographs, Olesia explores and visualizes the feelings associated with procrastination, making them physically tangible. This series is not just a collection of photos; it is a deep look into the emotional aspect of procrastination and its impact on our lives.

As a researcher of this subject, the artist had a personal and profound interest in the causes, consequences, and possible interventions related to procrastination. For years, Olesia herself struggled with procrastination, often accompanied by feelings of frustration and self-criticism. Only after years of self-discovery and therapy did she begin to understand the deeper mechanisms behind her tendency to procrastinate. This process of introspection and growth sparked her interest in understanding procrastination as more than just a superficial habit, but as a complex psychological phenomenon with profound implications.

This photo series depicts a person in an "exhausted" pose lying in the most unexpected places. The person's posture physically reflects the emotions of a procrastinator. Through her works, Olesia shows how a procrastinator will find all, even the most absurd, ways to avoid completing important tasks. Instead of taking action, they prefer to do nothing, which is reflected in their position and surroundings.

Through art, Olesia Shinkorenko seeks to express her own experience of procrastination, not only in terms of lost time and missed opportunities but also in terms of the internal struggle, frustration, and self-doubt that come with it.
